MERCEDES-BENZ VEHICLES EARN GOOD DESIGN AWARD

Montvale, NJ – Three Mercedes-Benz vehicles are the recipient of the GOOD DESIGN™ Award for 2009 including the Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss and the 2010 E-Class Coupe and Sedan. The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture presents the international GOOD DESIGN Award for the world’s most innovative and well-designed products each year since 1950.
Founded in Chicago by architects Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., GOOD DESIGN is a coveted design award that bestows international recognition upon prominent designers and manufacturers for advancing new, visionary, and innovative product concepts, invention and originality, and for stretching the envelope beyond what is considered ordinary product and consumer design.
Completely redesigned inside and out, the ninth generation E-Class captures the very essence of Mercedes-Benz design – from innovative technology and class-leading safety features to handcrafted luxury and unique styling. The trapezoidal twin shaped headlamps of the E-Class create a bold face while a modern, muscular stance is defined by several convex surfaces and taut lines including one that follows each rear wheelwell to shape the contours of the rear fenders that are reminiscent of the famous 1950s “Ponton” Mercedes. The new E-Class coupe shares the same muscular styling of the E-Class sedan, but features a hallmark pillarless design creating a complete open space with the vehicle’s cabin. The all-new E-Class features safety innovations such as ATTENTION ASSIST driver drowsiness monitor and additional intelligent safety systems including PRE-SAFE Brake, Lane Keeping Assist and Adaptive Highbeam Assist, which automatically adjusts headlamp range to maximize road illumination without blinding other drivers.
The SLR Stirling Moss, its entire bodywork made of lightweight carbon fiber, represents a stand-alone design concept with a pronounced arrow-shaped form characterised by an elongated hood and a compact, muscular rear. As there is no windscreen, the hood stretches from its striking tip right down into the interior created one complete sculpted vehicle body that connects the exterior to the cockpit. Only 75 units of the SLR Stirling Moss exist. The vehicle has a top speed of 217 mph.
Hundreds of the world’s leading corporations and design offices from 40 nations—from Shanghai to Istanbul—vied for the 2009 GOOD DESIGN Award. The GOOD DESIGN Award is presented annually by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design together with The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.

MERCEDES-BENZ USA RANKS 49th ON FORTUNE’S “100 BEST COMPANIES TO WORK FOR”

MONTVALE, N.J. – Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) announced today that it has been ranked one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” by FORTUNE magazine in its 13th annual survey which appears in the February 8 issue of FORTUNE, available on newsstands on Monday, January 25, and now at fortune.com/bestcompanies. In its first year as an entrant, MBUSA – the only automaker on the list – ranked 49th.

FORTUNE Deputy Managing Editor Hank Gilman says, “The most important considerations for this year’s list were hiring and the ways in which companies are helping their employees weather the recession. All 100 companies on our list are currently hiring, many of them aggressively, leading to more than 96,000 open job positions expected in the next year.”

“This is gratifying if you believe, as we do, that in order for a company to achieve long-term success, particularly in this economic environment, it has to have the full engagement, commitment and passion of its employees,” stated Ernst Lieb, President and CEO, MBUSA. “Only then can you inspire your retail network to do the same and deliver the dream that customers associate with the Mercedes-Benz brand.”

To pick the 100 Best Companies, FORTUNE partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America. Three hundred forty-three companies participated in this year’s survey.

Two-thirds of a company’s score is based on the results of the Institute’s Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each company. The survey asks questions related to their attitudes about the management’s credibility, job satisfaction, and camaraderie. The other third of the scoring is based on the company’s responses to the Institute’s Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring, communication, and diversity.

The Festival, which runs from January 5-18, 2010, starts the winter awards season with a spectacular program of films and a must-attend gala.

The two week celebration of films kicked-off with the Gala Awards Dinner on January 5th, where celebrity presenters and honorees such as Sean Penn, Helen Mirren, Marion Cotillard, Michelle Pfieffer, Lee Daniels, Rob Marshall, Diablo Cody, T Bone Burnett, Anna Kendrick and Jeff Bridges were driven in Mercedes-Benz 2010 S400 HYBRID luxury sedans and ML450 HYBRID SUVs.

“Mercedes-Benz is proud to support the festival and the Palm Springs International Film Society as a sponsor and official vehicle for the seventh consecutive year,” says Jill Martinette, Mercedes-Benz Regional Marketing Manager. “The festival’s red carpet arrivals and A-list honorees are a perfect opportunity to show that being eco-friendly is possible without sacrificing luxury.”

The S400 HYBRID features the world’s first lithium-ion battery in a production vehicle. The 275-hp V6 gasoline engine provides impressive fuel economy with an estimated 30 miles per gallon on the highway.

The ML450 HYBRID mid-size SUV uses a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine, two electric motors and sophisticated electronics to produce more than 46 percent better fuel economy than a comparable V8-powered ML550 model.

Throughout the two week festival, Mercedes-Benz is displaying several additional eco-friendly vehicles including the C300 Sedan, GLK350 SUV and the 2010 E350 Sedan and Coupe. Built with 85 percent recyclable materials, all four are powered by highly efficient V6 engines that achieve the California Air Resources Board’s most stringent exhaust rating as a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV).

MERCEDES-BENZ OWNERS BOOST BRAND TO NUMBER ONE RANKING IN J.D. POWER AND ASSOCIATES 2009 CUSTOMER RETENTION STUDY

Montvale, N.J. — Mercedes-Benz USA topped off five years of increasing customer retention rates to become the number one brand in the J.D. Power and Associates Customer Retention Study for 2009. According to J.D. Power, the Mercedes-Benz retention rate is the highest ever achieved by a manufacturer since the inception of the study.

According to the Customer Retention Study, which measures the percentage of vehicle owners and lessees who replace a previously purchased new vehicle with another from the same brand, residual value and vehicle quality have become increasingly important reasons for new-vehicle buyers to remain loyal to an automotive brand.

“This is a very real validation of the intense focus our organization and our retail network have put on making the Mercedes-Benz ownership the best in the industry. This follows on the heels of our impressive ranking in the recent J.D. Power Sales Satisfaction Index and our strong showing in the many surveys which measure the quality not only of the product but with the entire experience of ownership” said Ernst Lieb, president and CEO for Mercedes-Benz USA. “There is no better vote of confidence on the part of customers than the one they make with their wallets.”

According to Lieb, MBUSA has increased its sales volume month-over-month for the past three months and has improved its market share over each of the past four years and currently claims the highest year-to-date market share increase among all luxury brands.

Sharing center stage with the F-Cell and the SLS AMG, the fuel-sipping E350 BlueTEC is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 diesel with 210 horsepower, an impressive 400 lb.-ft. of torque and approximately 30 percent better fuel economy than a comparable gasoline engine. Now with revolutionary AdBlue injection that makes diesel exhaust super-clean, the E350 BlueTEC will be available in all 50 states in Spring 2010.

S-Class Debuts SPLITVIEW Technology

Also at the L.A. Show is an S-Class equipped with SPLITVIEW – a single display screen that allows the driver and front passenger to view two different programs at the same time. Making its West Coast debut at the L.A. Auto Show, the Mercedes-Benz ML450 HYBRID uses a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine, two electric motors and sophisticated electronics to produce more than 46 percent better fuel economy than a comparable V8-powered ML550 model. Integrated within the modified automatic transmission, each magneto-electric motor is dedicated to a specific purpose – one for pulling away under electric power, the other specifically for acceleration. With both electric motors, the ML450 HYBRID has a total system performance of 335 horsepower and 381 pound-feet of torque.
